[ Brigade just laughs at the look on Kaz's face ] Yes, we are. Cause I know you can do it, and I want you up there with me.
[ He points to the Frog Feet boots ] They're your safety. And if for some reason you slip, I promise I'll be there to catch you. [ He holds his fist out for a brofist ] No more tag. When we get there, we tag team that thing and help each other up. I'm going to let you see Paris from the best view nearly no one in the world sees.
[He gulps, briefly losing his composure because wow that's the Eiffel Tower and wow that's high up. But he takes a deep, centering breath and bumps his fist against Brigade's.]
Okay. [The Oh my Elaine, Brig I don't want to end up as street pizza, do you hear me?! panic is silent, though.]
Haha, soon he's gonna get everybody looking YO MAN at him.:))
[ Brigade puts his hand on his blademate's shoulder ] Don't worry. Breathe. I wouldn't be asking you to do this if I didn't know you could do it. [ He smiles at Kaz reassuringly ] C'mon. [ He taps the boy on the shoulder and starts running at a pace comfortable to Kaz, motioning with him to keep up as he vaults over a railing ]
[ wooooosh, timeskip! ]
[ No more games of tag. Just two boys freerunning at a steady pace over the French rooftops. Two boys free and flying ]
[ They get off from the rooftops close to the Eiffel tower and make their way to the foot of the structure. Two guards instinctively know what they plan to do from how they arrived and how they're looking at the French Landmark ]
[ Brig sighs ] Here comes trouble. I can flash my Netsach ring and intimidate them into letting us climb up. But you think you can do this diplomatically? You, Josh and Brianna handle these things so much better. [ He looks to Kaz while letting out a soft chuckle ]
[A half-awake/half-asleep Kaz picks up the phone when he hears the buzz. He’s been playing a classic RPG on his console for most of the night. So he has this idiotic smile on his face when he flops onto his stomach and types out a reply.]
SENT: 2:10 AM Yeah, you better call. Love you too. I’ve been playing Bravely Default all night, so yeah.
[Kaz has to hold the phone away from his ear when he answers. He’s smiling, though.]
Hey, babe~ Congratulations!
[Okay, maybe he wishes he were right there, arms wrapped around his newly-minted Oni-tsukai boyfriend. Yeah, well, he wasn’t exactly worried… Maybe he was, okay, he can’t help it.]
[He raises an eyebrow at Brigade and shrugs, sure he could probably handle talking to them.]
Okay, then. Lemme handle this.
[The guards that approach are wary of the two of them, he gets that from their mood.]
Parlez-vous anglais?
[He mangles his way through the question, and discovers that they do, in fact, speak English. He tells them that he and Brig are Hunters on patrol and they'd like to get a bird's eye view of Paris - properly get a lay of the land. They nod when he shows them his ring. They do ask that they not stay up there too long, though.]
So... Yeah, I guess we can go up there, but we can't stay too long.
[ Brig laughs ] Here's hoping they think clambering up without using the stairs is "official business". Use those Frog Feet, okay? Don't want you to fall. [ Brig leaps and grabs a hold on one of the beams that form a foot of the tower. He holds his hand out down to Kaz. ] Tag team. I'll pull and swing you up here and there and you can do it for me too. We'll get up faster that way.
[It was both good and not good that they were on the same page. Naturally, Kaz was still a guy with a boyfriend who wasn’t around. But then, as Hunters, they were committed to the Vigil.]
I know, and I’d give anything to be there… But there’s always a chance we’ll see each other on the field. I mean, c’mon… What were the odds that I’d see you on my Walk. Barring that, there’s always our leaves when we get the chance. I know you haven’t visited home in a while.
[Then he remembers that while Nico knows that he’s already fully initiated into the Brotherhood of Violence, he has no idea that Kaz is reactivating his Netsach license]
And speaking of… I’m activating my Netsach license as soon as possible.
[Now finding a place to sit down away from the noise of the party, and going for his cigarettes as he’s listening to Kaz talk. He’s concentrating on every word, on the way it sounds.
It’s been a long, long time. As for their run-in during Kaz’s Walk? That wasn’t nearly enough for him.]
Yeah, I’m hoping to find some time to do that soon. It’d be nice to see you again. [And, to that second part:] That sounds like a great idea. Might as well take advantage of what you’ve got, right?
[Yeah, he has, and he's been spending more time in the training room and the shooting range since Yue Rukia first showed up, since Brother Death told him that by letting them go, he challenged the Wings of Therion. Matter of fact, he was at the shooting range since around seven, having gone to mass the night before.
His shots: miss some, hit some. Clip after clip. Breathe, squeeze; breathe, squeeze. It's a while before he even looks at his phone, and when he does, it's only 'cause his stomach's growling.]
SENT: 11:45 AM Hey Alistair. Yeah, I checked. They're back in the Philippines.
[He closes his eyes for a minute, listening to Nico’s voice on the other end. Any other day it’d be the two of them talking on the couch, watching something on TV. Zangyaku was always something Nico wanted, and Kaz wasn’t going to stop him. So he sighs and buries his head in his pillow, the sound of his boyfriend’s voice making something inside him twinge.]
Did… Did they tell you where you’d be stationed?
[He hopes in vain that Nico says Kibo, but if Xi Wang is training him… That’s a pipe dream, and that’s also when he catches himself. The way the Magistrate had stared him down when he’d asked for passage had bothered him. Kaz didn’t want to interfere, and that same part of him wanted to see Nico in the Searing Wind someday.
The way uncle Mat had talked as well… Zangyaku and their commitment to the Vigil. Point of fact, his own compact is kind of the same, especially since Kaz is gunning for the White Lions. ]
Oh look, he comes with a resting bitchface now. (thanks to Yulia's mun)
SENT: 11:50 AM Hm. It bothers me quite a bit. I haven't had any nightmares or hallucinations since I heard. But... I don't think I want to step into the Abubot just yet.
[It's the truth, but he doesn't say that he wants his entire Blade by his side when he does. Because this time needs to be different. This time has to not be South Korea and a boy driven insane by a relic, and another boy desperate to save him at the cost of his own health, or the trust of his Blade.]
[And a part of him had been hoping that Kaz wouldn’t ask, that he’d have some other opportunity to break the news.]
Yeah. [A little softer now. There’s a bit of a pause before he responds for real.]
They’re assigning me to Tian. Magistrate Xi Wang wants more reliable blades at her side.
[China still wasn’t the safest of places. The thought did excite Nico - it would be a constant test of his mettle, and he was sure that he’d learn a lot - but it also meant that he still wasn’t anywhere near the people he cared about the most.]
[Kaz smiles at that. He nods at Brig and clambers up. The Frog Feet... Before this moment he hasn't thought of them as anything more than a really nice pair of boots. Now... He feels the purchase they give him on the metal. Kaz grunts with the effort as he climbs and snags a crossbeam, pulling himself deeper into the tower. Brig covers the difficult jumps by practically throwing they younger man.
It kind of makes him feel like Spider-Man by the time they get halfway up the tower. He's actually crouched on the thinning metal grating the same way the hero would on one of the covers of his comics (or Andrew Garfield in that one poster). Unlike Brig, though, his arms are starting to tire, so he has to actually sit back against the Tower when they get high enough. Only then does he get to admire the view of France, and for a second, the fear that he might fall has his heart thundering at his chest. Brigade's caught him at least a couple times when he slipped.
The air's getting a little thin when they do finally reach the top, though. Kaz digs out the water bottle Brig gave him and drinks, panting ever so slightly.]
[Well shit, he can't hide the sadness in his voice now. Even Kaz knew that Tian meant he'd be in a ton of dangerous situations. But then... Kaz happened to be a part of one of the Blades that liked to bite off more than they could chew sometimes.]
Sorry, I know being assigned to Tian means more field time, more opportunities to learn from Xi Wang, who scares me, by the way.
[Have a Kaz babbling at you about how Xi Wang scared the living daylights out of him after they saw each other at Bamiyan, and then he gets quiet.]
...Please tell me you didn't get too hurt going up against Hikaru, I mean I know he probably held back a lot, and you're a Riskbreaker and all that, but...
[He's not gonna say he misses you and be that clingy boyfriend. He's not. Nope.]
Yeah, here we are. [ Brig pulls out a cigarette and offers one to Kaz. He sits close, ready to pull his blademate to safety if ever he tips off balance from a bout of vertigo ] More importantly, here you are. Look up, bro.
You achieved this. [ He's smiling. There's a lot of love and respect in his tone. ]
[He's content just to listen to that and laugh a little when it's appropriate, because he needs some time to get that uncomfortable feeling out of his chest. Sad boyfriend means sad Nico, after all. That and he kind of likes his master. Ehe.
So thank god for that total topic shift. Who would've thought that it'd be easier to talk about the Blade King than anything else right now?]
Oh, I'm fine! I wasn't earlier, but the fight was really cool.
[He sends the text and wanders out to get some food. He doesn't really want to think about the Wings of Therion. Unfortunately, he practically can't get it out of his head anymore and he has to stop on the steps of the Great Hall. His breathing quickens and his eyes dart around. The conversation with Death had bothered him and now this.
They're coming for me.
Panic attacks and Kaz weren't old friends. He'd had only two: one at sixteen, and now. He sits there with his head cradled in his hands, trying to breathe.]
