[It's a little after seven PM when he leaves the War Hounds and his brother, intent on finding his boyfriend. It's when his phone starts blaring Highway to Hell that he may freak out.]
Hey ate Mags.
[He's already holding his phone away from his ear in case she starts yelling.]
[ Maggie Montelibano-Profaci don't do sermons kid. Wrong fox. Actually, wrong species altogether.
( She's terribly biased. This one's been on the receiving end of Cen Profaci's "talks" for as long as she could start making trouble for everyone else. ) ]
[ And he does tell her everything. About how the mission started, and how it all went downhill from the moment they got split up. Seeing as he's not one to keep anything from family, Kaz definitely tells Maggie how Aniki had come to his side. ]
And then, there I was... Standing on the Clock Tower of Twilight Town, staring out at the perfect sunset.
[ There is a significant pause from her end, enough to quite possibly make you wonder if the connection got cut -- which, of course, it wouldn't because ViceTech.
When Maggie does speak again though, her voice is soft. ]
I'm really glad you're okay.
[ She's doesn't comment Kaz's decision to turn the Blade King down, won't even speculate because "what ifs" are moot. It's enough for her to know that her Uncle had gone after the kid, and it's telling in it's own way: the set up, the choice of wording -- "him or me."
Kaz is alive and well and a Card. Things worked out -- that's more than enough. ]
[ You can hear the sadness in his voice, and all the unspoken things are in it. You know him well enough to understand that he's thinking about what it would have done to the people he loves if he'd fallen then. ]
I just... I just don't know what it would've done if I didn't have the will to come back. Nobody would've gotten there in time.
[ There's a bit of silence on her end, and you might be able to catch the familiar snap of a lighter and the following exhale that'll mean she's just lit up a cigarette. ]
Sometimes things like that happen on an engagement, Kaz. [ There's a somber note in her tone. ] But it all worked out, right?
[ And at the end of the day, that's what matters. ]
I guess... But... I can't shake the feeling that I messed up. I know I protected President Stone as best as I could, but what if I wasn't strong enough, or stubborn enough to come back?
Then you and I wouldn't be having this conversation.
[ She's saying that matter of fact. She's an animal at the core of her Kaz, a member of the Changing Breed who spent her childhood knowing full-well that the Darkest Vigil took people, never mind that they were people you loved or cared about.
It's not that she's unfeeling to what you're trying to drive at, but you got a second lease on life, one that's opened up opportunities and troubles that go hand in hand with being a functional immortal. ]
Sometimes hunters die, Kaz. It's a part of the reality that comes with being a Keeper of the Vigil. You do your best, and sometimes you get into scrapes that are overwhelming. If you die, you die. It's the same with getting that second breath.
That you're living and breathing and have something that gives you a longer lifespan, it just means that it wasn't your time.
[ She's taking another leisurely drag from her cigarette, pausing only to think 'huh, this lighter isn't mine,' before she tucks it away. She'll return it to Nick later. ]
Well, it better not be your time for a good, long while.
[ There's a smirk somewhere there. ]
Where else are Ren and I going to find a baby brother to torture and tease mercilessly?
[ He snarks a little, but it's the kind of snark that little brothers do when they're being "tortured". As it stands, he's glad to be around for longer. ]
That aside... When are you coming home?
[ Needs to know because of the other thing he's about to do. ]
Situating this after they've seen Tohru, so around 7.
Hey ate Mags.
[He's already holding his phone away from his ear in case she starts yelling.]
lmfao G
[ Nope. Not yelling. ]
That's all I get?
[ Hmmmmm :|
You'll also hear voices in the back, and someone talking about "parking the hearse". ]
no subject
[Hoo boy does he sound nervous, Maggie.]
U-um. So I take it you know?
no subject
[ There's the sound of leaves crunching underfoot and the voices in the back recede. ]
It's kind of standard procedure that you die first before you turn into a Card and acquire a Persona.
[ Come on, Kaz. You posted it on Facebook. David Young is kind of her mom's blademate? ]
no subject
Um... About that. I love you and tita and tito and kuya Ren. Just thought I'd say it.
[It's sincere, 'cause this one's got a lot of love to go around, and the Montelibano-Profaci's have kind of been really great to him.]
Would it also help if I said that Hikaru was kind of there to walk me home?
no subject
Yes, you actually hear her snort. ]
And you didn't tag him on the photo? Boo.
[ Maggie Montelibano-Profaci don't do sermons kid. Wrong fox. Actually, wrong species altogether.

[ Confused puppy is confused, Ate Maggie. ]

KAZ. [ Yes, this is the sound of fond exasperation. ]
You didn't tag Uncle Hikaru in the photo -- then again, he isn't in the photo but whatever. Okay, so TELL ME EVERYTHING.

[ You can hear him pacing, but it's gone from a panicked pace to a more "hey-I'm-talking-with-my-ate" pace. ]
That also means you're kind of stuck with me.

Not sure, to be honest. We're trying to wrap some things up here in Belarus.
[ HURR. Why are you asking? ]
Miss me already?
[ HEH. ]
no subject
[ Yes. Also Belarus? Want souvenir. ]
But I just... Maybe drinks when you come home?
[ Clingy tiny is clingy. ]
no subject
I miss you too, only not because I can call you at any time.
[ Yes, she is an unapologetic brat. Ask anyone. ]
That works. Maybe I'll grab a bottle of Kvas and let you sip.
[ MAAAAAAYBE. ]

[ You may hear his voice crack a little, and you know he's nervous when that happens. ]

Maybe it will be. Maybe.
[ That's as close to a YES as you will get, junior. ]
no subject
[ And now he remembers that he was kind of looking for someone. ]
Yeah, okay. Um. I need to go ate, kinda hafta put a ring on it.
no subject
Yes, she will. ]
This the boyfriend~?
[ If she sounds like she's wagging her eyebrows and tail, she might as well be. ]
no subject
Not for very much longer...
