[The fondness in Brig's voice makes Kaz wonder at how long ago this
was, considering his Blademate's age, even as Brig proceeds to tell him the
details of their little getaway.]
Looks like you had the time of your life there, Disquiet or no. [He
pauses then, head tilted to one side, a smile on his face.] I'm
glad I get to do this with you. I haven't had a decent run - not counting
Tokyo or Bamiyan - with anyone in quite some time.
[He bounces a little bit, and nods. Brig's approval makes Kaz blush
just a little bit. He'd been trying to work on his form before and during
the Walk. Running in Bamiyan with Nico had been fun. He's heard stories
about France, but never imagined he'd get the chance to run there.]
Yeah I'm ready.
Edited 2014-02-12 15:16 (UTC)
Feel free to describe where and how Kaz runs. I'll just take Brig's cue from there.:)
Then I hope I can make this a run for you to remember then. [ He smiles and jumps lightly on the balls of his feet ] Just run, and I'll follow. If I pass you, I won't leave you, don't worry. I'll just wait for you to pass me again and we can take turns picking the direction we want to go.
[ Brig smiles ] Parkour's about overcoming any and all obstacles. Freerunning's about self-expression. I know you already know this but I want you to just forget it all and flow. [ Brig punches Kaz playfully on the shoulder ] Tag, I'm it. Go get a head start. [ He smiles again and pushes Kaz forward ]
[Wait, what? is all Kaz can think before he stumbles through the gate, and onto the rooftops of France. He blinks at the urban landscape in the distance, before realizing that this is tag, and he breaks into a run, boosting himself onto a ledge and taking that first leap into the wild blue - dropping and rolling into a sprint.
He spies a ledge that's reachable and makes for it, going low to build enough momentum so as to spring from the ledge of his current rooftop onto the next, hauling himself up and over.
One look behind him and he dashes forward again, hands planting on a barrier to propel him forward and deeper into the cul-de-sacs of France, a laugh on his lips.]
[ Brigade runs through the gate in time to see Kaz make the jump to the ledge of the next rooftop. He smiles.
The boy isn't even relying on the Frog Feet boots. He's just running. There's still the flair he always has, but it's controlled and measured. He does what he knows he can, never pushing too far past his limit. He's not using the Frog Feet to do tricks beyond his current level. They're just there as a security.
The Everyman's walk. Kaz has been very different since he came back from it. He started unfurling his real wings when he let Oswald's go.
Given the opportunity, that boy will always choose to fly. Now it was their job as his friends to help him soar ]
I'm coming, Kaz! [ He calls as he breaks into a sprint, building momentum, falling into the freeflow. He runs to the edge of the building and runs there, with the beautiful drop below him and to his right, confident in his skill that he won't teeter and fall. It's always just so beautiful running on the edge.
As he reaches the end of the roof, he times his jump perfectly and lands onto the next rooftop. A shed's in his way. He leaps high into the air with the strength of his legs and the force of the motion he's built up, doing a reverse somersault in mid-air, falling back to the ground in an Air Christ, and rolling onto and off the edge of the shed's roof on his shoulder.
It's not a combat situation. It's not being flashy. It's just self-expression, and he hasn't had the opportunity to do that in so long.
He catches up to Kaz, running alongside but above him on an elevated ledge from where the boy was running. Brigade launches himself into a superman, tucks in and touches the top of his head onto Kaz's before rolling back onto the ground without breaking his momentum, and propelling himself with the force of getting up a good 20 yards ahead and onto the next rooftop.
He smiles back at his Blademate. Tag me back, his look says to him. Brigade slows his pace ever so slightly and carefully to Kaz's pace. If the boy pushes, he'll catch him. And if he's smart and fast on his feet, he'll be it again.
[Oops, got tagged. is what Kaz's smile says as Brig turns to look at him. He does note that Brig is matching his speed, just enough to let him maybe catch up, because yeah, the older man could probably outstrip him easily.
It's not a fight, it's two people running without anything else to think about, just the moment. So Kaz easily vaults over a brick outcropping, the padded gloves Brianna had gifted him before his trip providing purchase on the rough surface.
His landing is smooth enough for him to pour on speed, Brig being further away now, even as he finds the ledge. His momentum has built up, and Kaz kicks off the ledge, somersaulting in mid-air to stick a roll onto Brig's rooftop, and even then he's moving from the roll to a sprint. Brig is just about close enough to...]
Tag, Brig! Hahah!
[The grin splits his face wide, it's the honest sort of smile Kaz has had on for a while now. Goofy, boyish, and just a little smug. But he doesn't have time to savor his victory as he dashes off, spotting a metal staircase a good sixteen yards away, leading onto a higher rooftop. He makes for it, springing off the edge of the sloping roof and clambering noisily onto the metal. He runs a couple of feet up the wall and hoists himself onto the roof, before he frontflips onto the roof-proper.The winds whip at him, and he manages to just catch a second's breather before sprinting off again, spying two possible perches: a lower roof and a parallel one. He makes a break for the lower roof.]
He follows Kaz's direction and kicks the speed in again. He builds momentum running down the slope of the roof and breaks into a long jump that lands him right on the roof, without the need of the metal staircase and a wall climb, rolling as he lands and kicking off as he gets up into a burst of speed.
Brig sees the lower roof as well as the parallel one. He opts to give chase on the lower roof. He breaks into a sprint and pats Kaz on the back, just as the boy's feet kick off into a leap for the next roof.
Brig jumps, grabs onto the ledge of the higher roof and uses the momentum to swing himself up and over and in the opposite direction with minimum loss of speed. He turns his head back to watch Kaz mid-air before landing on the next roof ] Wrong way, Kaz! Over here! [ He laughs. He hasn't had this much fun running in so long.
He feels free.
Brigade keeps a pace a bit faster now than when he slowed down the first time for Kaz. The boy's going to catch-up, he knows Kaz will. Because if you keep it just within his reach, Kaz will always dig deeper to achieve his goal.
Brig makes the Eiffel Tower his North Star. That's where they're going. ]
[He feels Brig's hand on his back just as he makes the leap, flipping over and sticking his landing when Brigade instructs him that he's going the wrong way.
Oops.
Clearly, he has no sense of direction, but he adjusts. His Blademate's made it onto higher ground and Kaz just blows a stray strand of hair out of his face, trying to map the fastest way from where he is, never mind that he's already moving before he spots the balcony, close enough for him to jump, and from there, a bit of shimmying up a thick pipe before he hoists himself onto the roof of the building Brig landed on.
Is he winded? Maybe a little, but he spies Brig again and runs past him, slapping him on the shoulder as he passes. A burst of speed has him launched across a gap onto a parallel roof, and that's when he spies the Eiffel Tower in the distance.
Paris. We're in Paris.
The City of Lights, and he's only realizing it now. It's beautiful, breathtaking (and he's not just saying that because he's a little out of breath). He skids to a stop, and sits on the ledge, waiting for Brigade to find him, which shouldn't be very long.]
[ Kaz hears Brig catch up to him by his footfalls behind him. Brig has stopped running and is now slowly walking up to his Blademate. There's the click of a lighter as Brig walks to Kaz's side, smoking. ] Want one? [ He holds out the pack, a stick already peeking out ]
[ Brigade takes a deep breath as he looks over the rooftops of Paris with the Eiffel Tower in the distance. It's been a long while since he was last here. It's beautiful even on a cloudy day. ] I missed this. [ He puts an arm over Kaz's shoulder ] Thanks for joining me here this morning, Kaz.
[ Brigade had the sense to pack two water bottles before they'd left. Usually he never brought water for himself, but he'd expected Kaz would need some. He pulls out both from his jacket pocket and tosses both of them Kaz's way. ] Drink up and pocket what you don't finish.
[ A grin creeps up on his face as he points at the distance. ] We're going there. At the very top of it. [ He's pointing at the Eiffel Tower ] And hopefully our Netsach rings keep the guards off our back. "Patrolling probable suspicious activity."? [ He gives Kaz a look, asking if he could pull something like that off if ever they met with uncooperative guards ]
[ Brigade just laughs at the look on Kaz's face ] Yes, we are. Cause I know you can do it, and I want you up there with me.
[ He points to the Frog Feet boots ] They're your safety. And if for some reason you slip, I promise I'll be there to catch you. [ He holds his fist out for a brofist ] No more tag. When we get there, we tag team that thing and help each other up. I'm going to let you see Paris from the best view nearly no one in the world sees.
[He gulps, briefly losing his composure because wow that's the Eiffel Tower and wow that's high up. But he takes a deep, centering breath and bumps his fist against Brigade's.]
Okay. [The Oh my Elaine, Brig I don't want to end up as street pizza, do you hear me?! panic is silent, though.]
Haha, soon he's gonna get everybody looking YO MAN at him.:))
[ Brigade puts his hand on his blademate's shoulder ] Don't worry. Breathe. I wouldn't be asking you to do this if I didn't know you could do it. [ He smiles at Kaz reassuringly ] C'mon. [ He taps the boy on the shoulder and starts running at a pace comfortable to Kaz, motioning with him to keep up as he vaults over a railing ]
[ wooooosh, timeskip! ]
[ No more games of tag. Just two boys freerunning at a steady pace over the French rooftops. Two boys free and flying ]
[ They get off from the rooftops close to the Eiffel tower and make their way to the foot of the structure. Two guards instinctively know what they plan to do from how they arrived and how they're looking at the French Landmark ]
[ Brig sighs ] Here comes trouble. I can flash my Netsach ring and intimidate them into letting us climb up. But you think you can do this diplomatically? You, Josh and Brianna handle these things so much better. [ He looks to Kaz while letting out a soft chuckle ]
[He raises an eyebrow at Brigade and shrugs, sure he could probably handle talking to them.]
Okay, then. Lemme handle this.
[The guards that approach are wary of the two of them, he gets that from their mood.]
Parlez-vous anglais?
[He mangles his way through the question, and discovers that they do, in fact, speak English. He tells them that he and Brig are Hunters on patrol and they'd like to get a bird's eye view of Paris - properly get a lay of the land. They nod when he shows them his ring. They do ask that they not stay up there too long, though.]
So... Yeah, I guess we can go up there, but we can't stay too long.
[ Brig laughs ] Here's hoping they think clambering up without using the stairs is "official business". Use those Frog Feet, okay? Don't want you to fall. [ Brig leaps and grabs a hold on one of the beams that form a foot of the tower. He holds his hand out down to Kaz. ] Tag team. I'll pull and swing you up here and there and you can do it for me too. We'll get up faster that way.
[Kaz smiles at that. He nods at Brig and clambers up. The Frog Feet... Before this moment he hasn't thought of them as anything more than a really nice pair of boots. Now... He feels the purchase they give him on the metal. Kaz grunts with the effort as he climbs and snags a crossbeam, pulling himself deeper into the tower. Brig covers the difficult jumps by practically throwing they younger man.
It kind of makes him feel like Spider-Man by the time they get halfway up the tower. He's actually crouched on the thinning metal grating the same way the hero would on one of the covers of his comics (or Andrew Garfield in that one poster). Unlike Brig, though, his arms are starting to tire, so he has to actually sit back against the Tower when they get high enough. Only then does he get to admire the view of France, and for a second, the fear that he might fall has his heart thundering at his chest. Brigade's caught him at least a couple times when he slipped.
The air's getting a little thin when they do finally reach the top, though. Kaz digs out the water bottle Brig gave him and drinks, panting ever so slightly.]
Yeah, here we are. [ Brig pulls out a cigarette and offers one to Kaz. He sits close, ready to pull his blademate to safety if ever he tips off balance from a bout of vertigo ] More importantly, here you are. Look up, bro.
You achieved this. [ He's smiling. There's a lot of love and respect in his tone. ]
Yes, you did. [ Brigade nudges him on the knee with a fist ]
Why, Paris? [ A lot of reasons really. Memories and metaphor ] You already know it's special to me. I wanted to share it with you, among other reasons. What the French stood for in the War. The general spirit of France and it's people over the years. [ He'll gladly elaborate further if Kaz asks. ]
[He cocks his head at the last part. He remembers now that Brigade's over a hundred years old, he remembers what France was like before the veil came down... Curiosity piqued, he looks at the older man.]
[ Brigade lights up a cigarette. The War's always something that hurts to remember. Even more than the years in Russia. ]
The French fought the hardest in WWII. They took the worst hits from Germany. Lesser men would've folded, but France and its people wouldn't stay down. Against all odds, the French fought with tooth, nail, blood, sweat and tears. [ Yes, Kaz, he's comparing you to the French in the War. ]
Even before the War, the French were always giving; they would give their all. They were good people, no matter the low points they faced as a Nation in history. [ He takes another long drag. He's looking far into where the city meets the horizon. ] They gave the Statue of Liberty to the Americans as a gift. La Liberté éclairant le monde. [ He says the previous words in a practiced French accent only for those words ] Liberty Enlightening the World.
[ He looks to Kaz ] France and it's people, and you, are a lot alike. Well, at least from where I'm looking.
Fighting hard? Maybe... I just... I feel like there's so much I have to prove sometimes. Well, okay, lately a lot less.
[He thinks back to the night he succumbed to the tempation of the Wings.]
I really messed up that night and ever since then, all I've wanted to do is make sure I never make those mistakes ever again. I don't ever want to let anyone down again.
[He doesn't voice the other things.
I don't want any of you to have to bury me before I'm old. I don't want any of the people I love getting hurt because of my stupidity.
He shakes his head, because he's going to that place again, where his confidence is shaken and his resolve destroyed.]
So yeah, maybe I needed this. Thanks, Brig.
[He narrows his eyes at Brigade for a scant minute.]
Something else on your mind, though? We didn't climb up this high just for me, did we?
Sarreh.^.^ also, segue into Brig opening up! Huzzah!
"We are better than the worst mistakes we've ever made". Something my "dad" once told me. [ Brig smiles at Kaz ] Don't sweat it. We grow from our mistakes. Like you have.
[ Brig takes a drag and moves the conversation to his question ] Well, there wasn't any other plan really. But [ A pause ] I have been trying to be more open about myself with you all; something I haven't really been [ I'm sorry about that. ].
[ He thinks of his conversations with Kasumi and how the nights at Seigi were a culmination of the many other conversations he'd had with so many other people ] I felt that, maybe, this would be a good chance. That maybe a good run, fresh air and a good view would crack some of my walls a bit.
[Have a concerned puppy look, Brigade. Kaz is good at that sort of thing. He's genuinely worried, and he has every reason to. Much had changed since the day they met, the then-complete and then-unnamed Blade guarding a mysterious package, and Brigade sent there to retrieve it for Grendal. He scoots in closer to Brigade now.]
